Breeding Goldfish Successfully at Home

Interestingly, goldfish do not get pregnant by normal sense of the term. They lay eggs for reproduction. However, looking at them, you can find out whether they are in a position to breed. The behavior of male and female goldfish is different to show the signs that they are about to breed. Remember, it is a difficult task to breed goldfish when they are in aquarium and it may not happen by just a chance.

Finding the genders

It is not easy to identify the sex of the goldfish. There are only a few indications. The female goldfish are plumper then male. The male goldfish have tiny lumps on their face. These are called tubercles.

To get sexually mature, male goldfish should be at least two year old. They should be healthy and they should be able to swim around very fast as they will chase the females in order to stimulate their eggs. Usually the number of males should be double than the females.

The female goldfish should look heavy at their rear and their anal area may look soft. Only the females which are in perfect health can produce eggs which can fertile.

Creating proper conditions for breeding

You should create perfect environment and feed a good diet to goldfish for successful breeding. The water in your aquarium should carry normal temperatures (around 70° F). It should be clean and toxins should be at the minimum levels. Some real aquatic plants should establish normal aquarium environment. It should provide food for goldfish live female spawning more. common fish food should be avoided. The best time for breeding goldfish is spring.

Carefully follow the directions

The behavior of goldfish when changes are ready to spawn. Both are grouped males and females. The color on the skin will appear brighter. The female is larger than goldfish lookin size as they are about to lay eggs. The male goldfish will behave very aggressively and the bumps on their faces will be noticeably large.

The actual fertilization

Goldfish tend to breed in the morning. When you observe them, you will notice a sudden change in their behavior. They will try to remain at the bottom of the plants. When the females release their eggs, they will be in huge numbers (10,000 - 15,000 at a time). These eggs will look very tiny and they will be covered with a substance which will look like mucous. The males spend no time in fertilizing these eggs. They will deposit their melt on them.

The eggs will remain there till hatching takes place. Once they are hatched, you should remove them as quickly as possible because the male goldfish will tend to eat them! They will also try to eat the baby goldfish.

The fertilization process

The hatching of goldfish eggs usually takes place in around 3 to 4 days. Remember, most of the babies will not survive even under perfect conditions. To protect them, first you should remove them from the aquarium of their parents and put them in a separate tank. For moving the eggs from one tank to another, you should use spawning mops which are available in the shops. It takes about four months for the baby goldfish to grow. Thereafter, they will start displaying colors on the skin. The conditions of water and the temperatures should be very carefully maintained in order to achieve high survival rate of goldfish babies.

If you are keen in breeding your goldfish, you should observe them continuously and take immediate actions whenever required. Then you can get very good results.
