If the lake is a closed system, so as not to think of fresh water supply or drainage channel, how do you go to the pond for cleaning once emptyyear. It can be done with a sump pump or add a two inch PVC discharge pipe open to free air if it is available. Many locales do not allow you to discharge pond water into the sewer system so be careful. If you have free air, install a two inch PVC pipe under the pond and turn it up into the pond using an elbow. Glue the elbow to the pipe with the proper PVC cement.
Wrap a small plastic bag over the elbow to prevent any sand or dirt getting into the pipe while you build your pond. Bury your pipe and commence building your walls. Once the walls are complete and the base sand is installed, place your liner into place. Using your lightest helper, cut a small X directly over the elbow, but make sure it is smaller then two inches long on each cut. Now carefully push the membrane down around the elbow leaving the rubber as tight as possible on the elbow. Using a stainless steel hose clamp available at any auto parts store, securely clamp the rubber membrane to the elbow making a watertight joint. At the open air end of the pipe install a two inch PVC gate valve. This valve can be opened for draining and cleaning of the pond whenever necessary.

Fill your pond with clean fresh water. I use a small fish tank aerator pump to provide additional oxygen to the fish. The large surface area of the pond should be more than sufficient to aerate the water but the bubble pump will also prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs in the moving surface waters and it can provide yet another pleasant sound at your new goldfish pond. By scrounging both the rocks and membrane I spent a total of $27 for materials for my pond. Goldfish in my area are 27 cents each so twenty nice fish is a grand total of $5.40. Not bad for a couple days work. Enjoy your new pond and gardening project.

The age old "zinger"

The 3 second goldfish memory myth was made popular in recent years when scientists on the "Mythbusters" television show. The term "memory like a goldfish" has been in history; somewhat of an insult or "zinger" to the person on the receiving end of the comment (due to the historic belief their memory spanned a grand total of 3 seconds).

The Mythbusters crew started a craze when they debunked the theory by teaching the goldfish to swim through an underwater maze. Their findings clearly showed that goldfish memory is actually quite longer than 3 seconds, as the fish were able to improve the time they could complete the maze each consecutive time they went through.

Before the myth was publicly debunked another test was performed: Back in 2003 a Plymouth University study was done that showed a goldfish was able to be trained to bump an underwater lever to release food. The goldfish was started out with a lever placed in their bowl at a set time of day, to the point where the goldfish was found to anticipate the lever being placed in the tank. After the goldfish memory was conditioned: The lever could be placed in the water at any time and the goldfish recognized it as a way to get food.

What does all this mean?

To most people it's just a silly, meaningless myth. Common Ailments

Bladder disease -- Indicated by the fish floating on the top of the tank, or staying very close to the bottom for long periods of time. This is more often than not, a problem with gas and needs to be treated as such. If you were miserably bloated, you wouldn't be too quick to eat some more right? This problem is best served by not feeding the fish for a few days

Lice -- Indicated by green colored spots on the fish's skin. This is one of a few deadly goldfish ailments and your fish tank should be immediately medicated to prevent death, or the problem spreading to other fish (if it hasn't already).

Dropsy -- Indicated by a swollen belly and distended scales; the most deadly of all goldfish ailments, it needs to be treated with quarantine and medication to be cleared up.

Ick -- This problem is easy to diagnose, since your fish will have little white spots all over them. A cleaning of the tank, along with medicated drops or tablets in the water should clear up the "Ick".

Food For Thought

You can't always prevent problems from reaching the inside of your aquarium, but in most cases prevention is the best cure. If you provide clean water, a good filter and food for your goldfish, you should have very few problems. Most issues are caused by dirty, untreated water and in many cases; once goldfish ailments present themselves, they're harder to get rid of.
